Kamikaze Kindness

At St Andrew’s we unfortunately do not have a youth club, despite the numerous teenagers attending Junior Church. On any one Sunday there can be 15 to 20 in the two senior classes (11 years and up).

I have attended a few meetings held by and for youth leaders from the other English speaking churches in Brussels and Tervuren. They are all very active and enthusiastic. (BTW - I am about twice the age of any of the other youth leaders and would love if someone younger would attend the next planning meeting on Monday, 6 March at: 20:30 at Holy Trinity! You don’t have to have any particular expertise – just interest and enthusiasm!)

Kamikaze Kindness was one of their great ideas. It was to be seen as a “Practical demonstration of God's love... no strings attached”. On 21st January they did some “Kamikaze Kindness” (a much more evocative expression than “outreach”!) to the homeless on the streets of Brussels. They met at Holy Trinity to prepare food (soup & sandwiches) and then went out in teams, carrying soup in flasks, to distribute new pairs of thick socks to the homeless people.

We were very lucky to be represented by Gwyneth, Samuel and Michael , who ended up in the thick of it all in Central Station! Here’s what they thought about it:
Samuel: “Seeing the homeless people lining up in the food queue really made me realise how lucky we are having a house, having warmth and having the resources to live a basic life. It was great how the Belgian charity group “Operation Thermos” worked alongside our small soup, sandwiches and thick socks group- that is what charity should be all about.”
Michael: “The experience made me feel as if I was spending my time usefully. I even had a go at speaking French whilst serving the soup. I also liked working with the other young people from the other churches in Brussels.”
